The Father Of The Bride’S Speech
The father of the bride’s speech should bind his daughter to him with its sincerity and the love it expresses. The words should be words that she will remember and cherish all her life
That is not to say that it cannot have its amusing moments. The nicest relationships have lots of laughter in them and so it is fitting for the father to mention the length of his daughter’s skirt when she was a teenager or her ability to twist him around her little finger.
It is worth remembering that many of the people at a wedding do not know either the bride or the groom. They will be relatives or friends of one or the other of the couple. So the father’s speech should make those present feel they know the bride. Even those who already know her should feel they know her better when her father has finished speaking.
If he is acting as host the bride’s father should make everyone feel welcome at the wedding. Just saying welcome isn’t really enough. He should explain how all such occasions are brightened by the presence of loved ones.
The father of the bride may want to talk about his daughter’s place in the family and how she gets on with her siblings and with her mother. Often a father will express how like her mother the bride is and that she has inherited her mother’s talents or personality.
He should also welcome the groom and his family into his. Quite often they do not know one another well and so it is nice to mention how much they fitted into the family immediately or how much you have in common with them. If he says something nice about the groom he will immediately please his daughter not to mention her new-in-laws.
Marriage means different things to different people. On a wedding day, however, it is all about having confidence in the future of the couple. The bride’s father should express his belief that they will have a long and happy life together. He may give some helpful hints on how to achieve such a happily married life, often by joking at his own expense that husbands only need to learn the immortal words “Yes dear”
The father of the bride should end his speech with a toast to the couple. It is well worthwhile searching through poems and sayings to find something appropriate to the bride and groom. He could even write his own very personal toast. That should certainly earn him a hug and a kiss from his daughter.
